Spoke to Suresh Kumar - Katpadi - Vellore.

He has a FPO with 100 farmers in it. They focus on greens such as spinach etc. (Keerai).

It is a 40 day crop.

1 acre: 10000 bunches (kattu) is normal

During rainy days, they will lose 50% to rains. 1000 to 2000 bunches will only be possible during rains.

25,000 to 30,000 is the ideal amount spent every time for cultivation.

urea: Rs.300/- per bag (45kg per bag)
1 acre requires 3 to 4 bags

He claims they only use Urea and do not use any other pesticide - they use neem water as organic alternative.

In Koyambedu, they sell it for Rs.10 currently.

After Pongal, it will come down to Rs.3.

Their production cost is about 3 Rupees per bunch.

PSP of 5 to 6 appears to be reasonable.

Each time they can get about 25000 profit.

I told him that we do not believe in this artificial inflation/deflation done by the middlemen. Hence we cannot pay him Rs.10 currently.

Also told him that we can ideally source from him throughout the year for Rs.5 or 6 so they always get 25K profit every time.

He says ideally they can plant it two to four times a year. He is extremely happy to know that the farmers can make 1Lakh profit per year - which is very rare.

He will also let us know when they start the next round of cultivation so that we can plan the consumption accordingly.

Note: He also owns a few trucks which he rents out to the farmers.

L3 Rental: 1.8T ashok leyland: 3500Rs. per trip from Katpadi to Chennai
Travel time: 2.5 to 3 hours.

I have asked him to send a sample set to us - will pay him tomorrow by bank transfer.

He will load it tomorrow evening and it comes at 11pm in the night to Koyambedu.
